Our Take
The USAA Secured Platinum Mastercard Secured Card is a card that USAA insured individuals and their immediate families can take advantage of. USAA insurance is open to active and inactive military personnel. Because of the exclusive audience, cardholders are able to take advantage of a number of cardholder benefits that are typically associated with starter credit cards. In this case, cardholders are able to make their initial security deposit into a 2-Year Variable Rate CD that gains interest over time. The amount that you deposit, which is at least the minimum allowed amount and no more than the maximum allowed amount, is what determines your credit limit. You can add money to your CD at any time and request a credit line increase.
From there, you are able to take advantage of a number of card benefits, such as rental car insurance, purchase assurance coverage against the damage or theft of purchases made with the card, extended warranty protection of retail purchases made with the card, and worldwide automatic travel accident insurance when you buy your plane, train, or bus tickets with your card.
In addition to these benefits, cardholders receive a card that is low in cost. The annual fee is low, the interest rate is low, and the transaction fees are low. Even if there is a late or returned payment, the maximum fee is not charged for the first time in a six billing cycle period. Overall, it is a card that gives its cardholders flexibility and more control.
